The PianoHack started as a personal tool. As a bass player, I wanted to play background chords — and melodies with chords — for my own original music, live and in the studio, without spending years learning complex piano chording.
So I built a small box that sits between a MIDI controller and a sound source. You provide the rhythm and dynamics; the PianoHack turns wrong notes into right notes. If you know a little about piano chords, all your right notes stay right — and if you hit some clunkers, the PianoHack fixes them on the way through.
The philosophy
- Use the gear you already own. The PianoHack is just a box with MIDI in, MIDI out, and an SD card slot. You never have to give up any MIDI equipment you already have.
- Isomorphic by design. Learn a song or pattern in one key and play it in any key — same shapes, same fingering.
- For everyone. Non-players and musicians, beginner to advanced. Bass and guitar players, producers, and music lovers all get long-lasting productivity out of it, regardless of musical experience.
